Mike da Ponte discovered glassmaking during his education at Illinois State University. While an undergraduate student, he began to develop his interests in hot sculpting. Through many hours of assisting and observing different techniques in the hot shop, he began to establish a stylized approach to the material. All of his work explore the possibilities of combining glass with other materials including, but not limited to, resin, ink and paint, wood, metal, fibers and even found objects. These compositions are a way to see how glass can exist in one form while removing it's traditional characteristics of being shiny and seductive. His goals are to create a unique and non traditional approach and evironment to presenting glass that is cast, blown or hot sculpted.
